Well if you want to do only typing using MS Word or Eqiv it's all right and it should manage to run DVD's all right.

It's a celeron chip though which means it's going to be rather slow for any thing else.

For that price though I'd be very worried about the build quality. How solid it is, does the screen flex, what the keyboard feels like.

If you think your going to do alot of typing with it try it before you buy it if you can!

Also who's the manafacturer and what's it's warrenty? Your'd also want to look at the screen and check it's bright enough for easy use.

And I really hope it's not a Dell machine.

In short I'd really suggest having a play with one if you can before buying.

$1400 locally for such a laptop seems resonable.

Is see the image link it is a Toshiba so it should be of resonably quality. I'd still recomend having a fiddle with one before buying if you can to get a feel for the keyboard and screen. And Check the Warrenty! Standard is one year and some offer two years.

Also note it's probably worth extending the warrenty to 2 or 3 years if they offer you that option and it's not too expensive.

This one might be an option.

ASUS 2500HComes with a faster processor (2.8Ghz), more software (works might be of use unless you were going to get office or use openoffice), Laptop bag and laptop mouse. Also includeds bundled EPSON printer though that might not be as of much interest. Also has a two year warrenty on the Laptop it's self. Also has all the usually features 30GB HD, DVD/CD-RW/CD-R. It also has TV-OUT and a thing called Audio-DJ which means if you've a music CD in the drive you can get the laptop to play it with out turning it on, (Controls on the outside front). Also has plent of USB ports and a Firewire port which is nice.

Also being a Dicksmith one you can probably wander in to the nearist store and have a quick fiddle to see what it's like.

Abit more expensive at $1797 incl GST though and weighs a couple of hundred grams more.

Sorry had just gone to Uni for 30 mins.

Anyway 12 months isn't to bad for a warranty though longer is nicer of course :)

Note however if it's the laptop the wharehouse Stationery has on special at the moment there are some differences from the Specifications you listed above.
The Correct ones are.

DISPLAY: 14.1" TFT, 1024 X 768 Resolution
PROC: Mobile Intel Celeron Processor 2.2GHz with 400MHz FSB
CACHE: 256KB L2 cache
CHIPSET: Intel 852GM
HARD DISK: 30GB
MEMORY: 256MB PC2100 Expandable to 1GB
STORAGE: DVD-ROM/CDRW
COMMS: V.92 modem, Intel 82562ET 10/100 Ethernet, Integrated wireless LAN
antenna (Optional wireless LAN module required)
GRAPHICS: Intel Extreme 852GME with up to 64MB UMA video memory
OS: Microsoft Win XP Home
AUDIO: AD1981B AC'97 Software Sound Stereo speakers
POWER: 6 Cell 3600mAh Lithium-Ion battery, 2.8 hours Battery life
KEYBOARD: 85 key keyboard
EXPANSION: parallel, RGB, 2 x USB 2.0,modem, LAN, headphone port, microphone port
PC CARD SLOT: Type II PC card slot,
DIMENSION: (w x d x h) 332mm x 293mm x 33-40mm
WEIGHT: 2.8 Kgs

The first thing to note is that it's a little faster than the specs you previously posted however it has a smaller screen at 14.1" rather than 15".

Apart from that it looks like a fairly basic standard laptop.

With regards to screen flex all I can suggest make sure it's fairly tough eg if you push it gently at the back of the screen the screen doesn't bulge noticably at the front and that if you try wiggling the screen a little it doesn't flop around to much.

Apart form that all I'd really say is that it's probably worth getting another 256MB of memory stuck into it for you that would make a noticeable improvement to windows.
